Specifically, disaster management is about organizing and directing resources to cope with a disaster and coordinating the roles and responsibilities of responders, private sector organizations, public sector agencies, nonprofit and faith-based organizations, volunteers, donations, etc.



Disaster management is a process that involves preparing for and responding to disasters. It involves: 

Prevention
Activities that help prepare communities for a disaster, such as emergency drills or pre-stocking relief items
Mitigation
Actions taken before a disaster to reduce the impact of the disaster, such as analyzing risk, reducing risk, and insuring against risk
Preparedness
An ongoing process that involves planning and training for what to do in the event of a disaster. This includes ongoing training, evaluating, and corrective action
Response
Actions taken directly after a destructive event occurs, such as search and rescue efforts, emergency health care, and injury assessment
Recovery
Activities that help people affected by a disaster meet their basic subsistence needs
